Transforming a Sprinter Van: The Ultimate Victron and Lighting Build Experience

When a customer brings a project with a clear vision beyond a basic van conversion, it sparks creativity and innovation. Ardie came to us with a precise idea: he wanted a compact van equipped with a powerful Victron electrical system and an impressive array of lights. This build was not just about functionality but also about style and smart design. The result is a compact van that turns heads and delivers reliable off-grid power and lighting control.

Designing the Electrical Cabinet for a Compact Space

One of the biggest challenges was fitting a complex electrical system into a compact van without sacrificing space or accessibility. Working closely with Ardie and his plywood specialist, we designed a vertical cabinet that neatly houses all the electrical components. This vertical setup maximizes space efficiency and keeps everything organized.

The cabinet includes:

  • Two Lithium Battery Systems 440Ah batteries stacked for a total of 880Ah capacity

  • Victron Multiplus 3000 inverter/charger for 240V power needs

  • Two 50A DC-DC chargers to maintain battery charge from the vehicle alternator

  • Two solar controllers: one for portable solar panels and one for roof-mounted solar

  • Victron Cerbo GX and screen for detailed battery and system monitoring

This setup ensures Ardie has a reliable and powerful energy source for all his off-grid adventures.

Powering the Van with High-Capacity Lithium Batteries

The heart of this build is the battery bank. Using two 440Ah Lithium Battery Systems stacked together provides a massive 880Ah capacity. This large battery bank supports extended off-grid living, powering everything from lights to appliances without worry.

Lithium batteries offer several advantages:

  • Higher energy density for longer use in a smaller space

  • Longer lifespan compared to traditional lead-acid batteries

  • Faster charging capabilities

  • Lighter weight, which is crucial in a compact van build

This battery setup, combined with the Victron Multiplus 3000 inverter, delivers clean and stable 240V power for household appliances and charging devices.

Advanced Solar Charging for Continuous Power

To keep the batteries charged, the van uses two solar controllers managing separate solar inputs. One controller handles portable solar panels, allowing flexibility to set up solar power wherever needed. The other manages roof-mounted solar panels, providing constant charging while on the move or parked.

This dual solar setup means Ardie can maximize solar energy capture throughout the day, reducing reliance on the vehicle engine or shore power.

Lighting That Sets the Mood and Enhances Safety

Lighting was a major focus for Ardie’s build. We installed a variety of lights with different colours and functions, all controlled by a single remote for ease of use.

The lighting setup includes:

  • Roof and exterior lights with white and amber options for practical illumination

  • RGB mood lighting inside the van to create ambiance

  • RGB rock lights for under-vehicle lighting effects

  • Stedi white amber light bars at the rear for visibility and safety

  • Laser bars at the front for powerful forward lighting

All 12V lights and appliances are controlled by an Altiq switch panel with two control panels: one for the front and one for the rear of the van. This master switching system simplifies managing all electrical devices.

Monitoring and Control with Victron Cerbo GX

To keep track of the entire electrical system, we installed the Victron Cerbo GX with a dedicated screen. This device provides real-time monitoring of battery status, solar input, inverter activity, and more. Ardie can easily check system health and performance at a glance, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

The Cerbo GX also allows remote monitoring and control via smartphone or computer, adding convenience and peace of mind.

Why This Build Stands Out

This compact van build is a perfect example of combining technical expertise with creative design. It meets Ardie’s specific needs for power, lighting, and space efficiency while delivering a stylish and functional motorhome.

Key highlights include:

  • Large 880Ah lithium battery bank for extended off-grid power

  • Dual solar controllers for flexible and efficient solar charging

  • Comprehensive lighting system with colour-changing and safety lights

  • Smart electrical cabinet design for space-saving and accessibility

  • Advanced monitoring with Victron Cerbo GX for system control

This build is a head-turner on the road and a reliable home away from home.
